Battery Alexander in the Marin Headlands was the destination for this months campout for 13 scouts on the 20th-22nd. It rained heavily Friday night and Saturday morning yet the troop stayed dry inside the pre-WW1 concrete bunkers. We even managed to get in a 10 mike hike as part of the Hiking Merit Badge on Saturday. The 8 scouts who made the hike are to be commended for their spirit of adventure in braving the driving rain and mud. Michael K. was especially adept at finding the mud. On Sunday the scouts and scouters got a treat in an unscheduled visit to a former Nike Hercules Missile Battery. The National Park Service, through a group of dedicated volunteers, is restoring the long abandoned base to its 1961 appearance during the height of the Cold War. The troop even got to ride an elevator carrying a missile from the underground storage bunker to the above ground launching area. A great campout with a little history lesson thrown in made for a fun time for everyone.
The scouts assisted our Chartered Organization, The Warm Springs Rotary Club with their Annual Citizen of The Year Awards on Sunday February 14th. The scouts acted as greeters and helped the guests from their cars and into awaiting shuttles (driven by scout parents) for the ride to the top of the hill where more scouts opened doors and assisted the guests from the vehicles.
